Knowledge Dissemination

Analyzing strategies for the most effective possible dissemination of knowledge from colleges and universities to researchers, students, and other learners.

In 2008, Ithaka's research advisory committee suggested that we begin to devote additional resources to a new area of emphasis, Knowledge Dissemination. Our objective is to analyze new and existing strategies that allow for the broadest possible dissemination of knowledge from academia. Our interests range from relatively traditional courses and publications to the various new kinds of dissemination mechanisms made possible by the networked environment, not only for the benefit of traditional researchers and faculty but also for new kinds of learners as well. Our strategic services project on University Publishing in a Digital Age is an example of the type of project that falls under this area of interest, as does analysis we have conducted about how best to expand the availability of existing publications to the developing world. In 2008-2010, Ithaka will be conducting a major study of the development of OpenCourseWare initiatives and the broader OCW movement.
