On October 27, 2009, along with Texas A&M and the University of Houston, ITHAKA hosted a forum titled Next Generation Digital Publishing, Preservation, and Scholarship in Houston, TX.

The forum focused on initiatives in which ITHAKA, through its services JSTOR and Portico is currently engaged, and highlighted by examples of next generation publishing and preservation efforts happening within the Texas higher education community. Topics included: digital scholarship, metrics of value, digital preservation, and new research tools. Speakers included: Dana Rooks, University of Houston’s Dean of Libraries; Charles Backus, Director of Texas A&M University Press; Holly Mercer, Head of Digital Services and Scholarly Communication of Texas A&M University; Joel Thierstein, Rice University’s Associate Provost for Innovative Scholarly Communication and Executive Director of Connexions; Steven Smith, Associate Dean for Collections and Services at Texas A&M University; and Ron Snyder, JSTOR’s Technology and Research Manager.
