On September 27th, ITHAKA held several sessions focusing on exciting new developments taking place throughout the organization at JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S+R. Kevin Guthrie, President of ITHAKA, set the stage for the Sustainable Scholarship Conference 2010 and gave an overview of the goals of this event. Morning and afternoon sessions addressed new developments in content and service offerings, preservation and research.

1:30 - 3:00 Afternoon Session A:JSTOR as a Research Platform: Using Data Analysis to Inform Future Directions This is a general session open to all those interested in learning more about JSTOR as a research platform: our vision for the development of the platform, and how we are using our platform activity data to inform the development of features and services. This session will include a brief tour of the updated platform, an overview of the roadmap outline, and a discussion of the platform data analysis that helps to inform our plans. Afternoon Session B: Ensuring Preservation in a Digital Environment The long-term preservation of scholarly literature has always been a part of the mission of ITHAKA and its associated services. This session will provide a summary of ITHAKA-wide preservation-related initiatives, including an update on Portico and its response to evolving preservation needs in the community as well as insight into Portico’s experience in becoming the first digital preservation service to be independently audited by the Center for Research Libraries (CRL). The next phase of Ithaka S + R’s “What to Withdraw” project will also be addressed. Afternoon Session D: JSTOR: New Audience Initiatives A common goal for many publishers and libraries, as well as for JSTOR, is to facilitate the widest feasible dissemination of content – not just to academia, but to other sectors and individuals who have a need for or interest in these important works. This session will explore progress on a variety of initiatives undertaken by JSTOR to make scholarly works available to new audiences in new ways. We will cover the alumni access pilot, mobile apps, and social networking activities. How can your institution or publication benefit from these initiatives? What other approaches have you explored to widen content dissemination that others may learn from?
