Who’s in Charge?:  Reflections on Faculty and Librarian Surveys Concerning Changes in Scholarly Communications.

Ithaka has conducted three nationwide surveys of faculty attitudes pertaining to electronic resources and libraries (2000, 2003, 2006).  It also conducted a companion survey of librarians in 2006.  The speaker will discuss findings from the surveys, with a particular emphasis on disciplinary differences among faculty attitudes and what clues the differences might offer to the development of library services.  It is hoped that the survey results will initiate a discussion about steps that are being taken, and not being taken, to manage the substantial change impacting libraries as they serve the needs of faculty and students.  Are libraries managing the change strategically to result in the best possible outcomes?  Is it even possible for libraries to affect the outcomes?
