ITHAKA (www.ithaka.org) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping the academic community use digital technology to preserve the scholarly record and to advance research and teaching in sustainable ways. ITHAKA provides innovative services that benefit higher education including JSTOR, Portico, and Ithaka S+R. ITHAKA is headquartered in New York, NY with additional offices in Ann Arbor, MI and Princeton, NJ.
Reporting to the EVP, Content & Technology Services, the VP, Content Management is responsible for strategic planning and operation of all phases of content management for JSTOR and Portico including: content production and operations, content architecture, content management tools and systems, and long-term preservation of digital objects. The VP, Content Management will oversee a unit of approximately 70 staff located in Ann Arbor, MI and Princeton, NJ and responsible for digitization of more than 6.75 million pages and ingest and preservation of an estimated 2 million articles, 100,000 e-books and 5-10 Tb of digital historical collections annually.
The VP’s responsibilities extend to both internal and external constituents and include, but are not limited to, the following:
Provide the vision, leadership, strategic direction required to ensure JSTOR Back Issues and Current Scholarship and Portico product offerings are supported by a leading, technology-driven Content Management (CM) unit that fulfills business objectives and honors obligations to rights holders
Represent and promote CM unit within ITHAKA and serve as internal expert on CM and related technologies
Contribute CM perspective and expertise to organization’s strategic planning and direction
Provide overall unit management; ensure successful execution on unit goals
Mentor and develop staff
Represent unit and organization externally as recognized CM and CM technology expert in scholarly publishing, content management, library, and digital preservation forums
The ideal candidate will have deep experience in large scale scholarly content management and publishing technologies, will excel at establishing and realizing a vision for a content management unit highly responsive to business needs, and will have strong communications skills and a proven ability to communicate content management issues and opportunities to executive, management and operational staff internally and to external stakeholders. The position calls for an experienced manager with the ability to balance strategic and tactical activities; an eagerness to shape and apply exemplary content management technologies and practices to a growing organization; and a preference to work collaboratively across various teams, units, and multiple locations. Travel (25% to 30%), primarily to conferences and ITHAKA offices, is required.
Qualifications
A minimum of ten years experience with proven successful track record managing large scale scholarly publishing or content management operations and contributing to industry trends
Extensive experience in management of teams, vendor relations, and multi-million dollar budgets; demonstrated ability to set goals and execute within established timelines and budgets; willingness to work in a hands-on environment
Familiarity with information management, digital preservation standards and best practices, and metadata standards
Track record with successful collaborative efforts and demonstrated ability to mentor staff
Superior verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated success communicating to diverse internal, external, lay, and expert audiences; proven ability to listen, analyze, and synthesize complex information
Deep affinity for and understanding of scholarly values and enterprise
Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree preferred
