Ithaka, JSTOR and ARTstor share an overarching mission to serve higher education around the world through the creative deployment of new information technologies.  Although we are distinct entities, our common purpose creates opportunities to collaborate as Affiliates.  Ithaka provides essential administrative services that enable the Affiliates to focus on core mission-related activities, while at the same time lowering the costs that would be incurred if each entity had to provide these services on its own.  There are also cross collaborations among the Affiliates; for example, JSTOR’s library relations team supports both ARTstor and Portico, one of Ithaka’s incubated initiatives.    Our close working relationship allows each organization to learn from the others’ experiences, sharing insights and lessons along the way.  Ithaka’s incubated entities, in particular, benefit from a collective knowledge and experience that would otherwise take years to acquire.
