These case studies were assembled during the course of our research on the possible uses of open source software in higher education.  While these materials are not included in the final report of this study, they helped to inform our understanding of the ways a variety of open source projects have originated and evolved over time, and provided a glimpse of different governance and business models for OSS.  We found it especially valuable to understand what different lifecycles of these projects looked like, and the challenges they faced at each milestone.  The OSS projects profiled here were selected because they provide particularly useful examples of a particular model, because they are of particular interest to the higher education community, or both.

These case studies were compiled largely from websites, interviews with key participants, and some published information. We recognize that these stories are still being lived, and thus some of our information may be outdated.  We also recognize that those involved with these projects may have different perspectives on how events transpired, and that facts can be miscommunicated or remembered incorrectly.  In either case, we would welcome input from the community to correct or enhance the information we have here.  This is not intended to be a final or thoroughly polished document, but we felt that the information it contains would be of enough interest to merit sharing.
