The Role

ITHAKA is seeking a Senior Manager, Business Development to help us map the future of our mission-driven organization.  Using strategic insight, financial acumen and an explorer’s zeal, the Senior Manager, Business Development will discover, cultivate and enact strategic partnerships, investments and M&A opportunities that align with our organizational strategy and mission. You will help to manage and organize the portfolio of strategy, innovation, and new business projects that together define ITHAKA’s future horizons. And you will work with the JSTOR Labs team to discover, develop and evaluate next-generation features, products and services for ITHAKA. The Senior Manager, Business Development will play a critical role in strengthening ITHAKA’s ability to fulfill its mission of expanding access to education. Responsibilities

  • Network within, develop, and maintain a deep awareness of  the higher education and scholarly communication ecosystem. Informed by this market intelligence, discover and cultivate strategic partnerships, investments, and M&A opportunities that are aligned with and complementary to ITHAKA’s mission.  
  • Produce financial and strategic assessment of partnership, investment, and M&A opportunities, analyzing, quantifying, and communicating alignment, value, and risk of each opportunity.
  • Develop and negotiate transaction terms, working with executive leadership to ensure alignment with organizational mission and strategy.
  • Working with ITHAKA executive leadership, manage and communicate the portfolio of long term strategy, business development, and innovation efforts, assessing and prioritizing across multiple opportunities, markets and time-horizons.
  • Manage strategic partnerships and M&A opportunities, leading cross functional, collaborative effort to conduct legal, financial and technical due diligence.  
  • Work with design and engineering in a dynamic and cross-functional product discovery team.  Representing and refine product/business viability as the team explores and develops promising concepts
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication of decisions and actions, laying groundwork for successful long term sustainability.  

Experience and Skills

  • 7-10 years experience in developing strategic business partnerships and evaluating and enacting investment and M&A opportunities
  • MBA preferred
  • Demonstrated experience and success using M&A and/or strategic finance to enhance an organization’s mission and long term sustainability
  • Experience with technology-driven product companies and demonstrated ability to craft business partnerships between technology providers
  • 1-2 years product development experience, including familiarity with product discovery methodologies such as design thinking and lean startup
  • Familiarity with higher education and scholarly communication market is desired

Compensation & Benefits

At ITHAKA we believe in openness and equity. Part of living those values is our commitment to clarity about salary ranges, so candidates know what to expect. The starting salary for this position ranges from $126,000 to $156,000 per year. Starting pay may vary with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Our total compensation package for benefits-eligible employees includes employer-paid medical, dental, and vision plans, an employer-paid 10% retirement contribution, paid parental and caregiver leave, 22 days of paid time off, 11 paid holidays, 12 sick days, gym reimbursement, and more.
