The Role

Ithaka S+R is a nonprofit research and consulting service that informs policy, guides strategies, and builds evidence-based tools to broaden access to postsecondary education, improve student and workforce outcomes, and advance scholarship.

As an Ithaka S+R intern, you will work part-time (20 hours weekly) with the Publications, Communications, and Marketing team. In this role, you will help identify and better understand Ithaka S+R’s key audiences, engage in research to build contact lists of higher education stakeholders, and gain hands-on experience by using communication strategies to engage with those audiences. You’ll play a key role in helping us spread the word about innovative and impactful Ithaka S+R projects that help shape the national postsecondary educational landscape, improve the lives of students, and serve key stakeholders across the higher education sector. The intern will report to the Ithaka S+R Marketing Manager.

Responsibilities

Interns will engage in the following core experiences:

  • Gain hands-on experience with communications and marketing, including social media management and contact list building.
  • Gain a better understanding of higher education roles and communities.
  • Develop a broad knowledge of Ithaka S+R’s work through exposure to and active participation in discussions beyond the scope of the intern’s specific project.

Interns will support one or more projects during the course of their term. Specific project components, tasks required to complete them, and expected project deliverables will be defined in collaboration with the intern’s supervisor and additional team members. Potential project components may include: 

  • Building contact lists of relevant higher education stakeholders to help us better identify and reach our target audiences.
  • Contributing to efforts to engage and reach new audiences through LinkedIn and mass emails.
  • Supporting management of the Ithaka S+R website.

Experience and Skills

Any combination of professional experience, volunteer work, coursework, or other transferable skills may be applied toward these qualifications. Strong candidates will possess several of the following:

  • Currently a third- or fourth-year student enrolled in an undergraduate degree program or a graduate-level degree program  
  • Pursuing a degree in a field that requires superior writing, communication, research, and critical thinking skills. 
  • Strong interest in Ithaka S+R’s mission to solve challenges facing higher education. 
  • Comfort working in a fluid, highly collaborative, remote team environment.
  • Ambitious self-starter, enthusiastic about learning new skills.
  • Highly effective communicator, eager to collaboratively set goals and seek feedback.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks while ensuring attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Interest in learning about communications and marketing.

Compensation
