The Role

We are looking for an Assistant Controller to join ITHAKA, a highly-successful non-profit with a mission to expand access to knowledge and education around the world whose brands include Artstor, Ithaka S+R, JSTOR, and Portico. The Assistant Controller plays a pivotal role in the financial management of ITHAKA. Reporting to the Controller, this position is accountable for aiding in the preparation of financial statements, budgeting, and internal controls. The ideal candidate will bring a blend of accounting expertise, analytical skills, and a passion for our mission.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the accounting department, including transaction entries, ledger maintenance, and reconciliation.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements, and stay updated on industry changes.
  • Contribute to the annual budgeting process and financial forecasting.
  • Support the Controller in enhancing and implementing financial systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Lead internal audit activities and assist The Controller with external auditors for annual audits.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff; fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Manage the reporting and analysis of financial data, providing actionable insights to stakeholders.
  • Take part in strategic projects, financial reporting system upgrades, and process optimization initiatives.
  • Occasional travel, comprising less than 10% of the time may be necessary, with a primary focus on visits to our Michigan and New York offices.

Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or CMA preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role.
  • Solid knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Proficient with financial management software and advanced Excel skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and time management skills.
  • Excellent leadership abilities with a track record of team development.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly.
  • Non-profit industry experience is a plus, but not required.

Compensation and Benefits

At ITHAKA we believe in openness and equity. Part of living those values is our commitment to clarity about salary ranges, so candidates know what to expect. The starting salary for this position ranges from $122,000 to $153,000 per year. Starting pay may vary with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. At present, our total compensation package for benefits-eligible employees includes medical, dental, and vision plans, an employer-paid 10% retirement contribution, paid parental and caregiver leave, 22 days of paid time off, 11 paid holidays, up to 12 sick days, wellness benefits, and more. Please note that ITHAKA, at its discretion, may make changes to its benefits programs from time to time.
